Growing up, we would sing in Sunday School

"I am the Church.

You are the Church.

We are the Church, together.

All who follow Jesus, all around the world.

Yes, we're the Church together."

The song would continue with particular hand motions.  "The Church is not a building" we would sing with interlaced hands.  "the Church is not a steeple," we would begin to laugh, knowing what was coming as we pressed our index fingers together, pointing up like a steeple. "The Church is not a resting place," with our hands pressed together as a pillow under one cheek.  "The Church is the people," we sang louder as we turned our interlaced fingers up to face the sky and wiggle like people celebrating.

In this past year, North Presbyterian Church has sold the building that it inhabited for more than 80 years and is now renting space in the same building, now called, "The Peoples Cathedral".  Worshiping in the Peoples Cathedral are three congregations:  St. Isaacs Christian Orthodox Church of American (the new owners), La Voz de Dios, and North Presbyterian.

I am so grateful to God that, as a child, I sang the song and an adult, I get to LIVE the song of how the church is the PEOPLE!  And, I am in awe at this community's courage and faithfulness to demonstrate to the broader Church and neighborhood that the Church is the people: the hands, feet, and heart of the Body of Christ in the world.

Will you join this ancient and yet new edge of Church history - being part of a Christian community that has no building?  Will you be part of God's new creation in this new day for North, as Church being the People?

With You on the Journey,

The Rev. Ashley Seaman

Ashley graduated from Columbia Theological Seminary, Decatur, Georgia in 2001 and came to Denver to serve as the Associate Pastor for Spiritual Life at Wellshire Presbyterian Church. She has served the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) on national committees like the Peacemaking Program and Committee for Ecumenical Relations, as well as its representative to the Central Committee of the World Council of Churches, from 1998-2006. Ashley’s theology and spirituality is fed by these local and global experiences of church, culture, people, and the Spirit. She is excited to be part of North’s diverse community.
